Sept. 23, 1956: This image of visitors listening to an address by President Eisenhower at the National Field Days and Plowing Matches near Newton, Iowa, was featured on the cover of The New York Times Magazine. Eisenhower’s opponent, Adlai Stevenson, spoke to the crowd on a different day. The 1956 campaign was the second time that both Eisenhower and Stevenson competed for the presidency. This is what’s missing from politics these days: plowing matches.
